About the newsletter

A desk built for the serious reader.

The Black Critical Thinker is an independent political newsletter for Black Americans who want to be taken seriously — and who plan to be useful to the people sitting next to them. We publish four mornings a week, we cite our sources, and we work for the reader, not the algorithm.

The Black Critical Thinker

Welcome. This is an online political newsletter for black Americans. We strive to bring black Americans into the political arena. We advocate that black Americans not vote on color, but on what tangibles the politicians will give black Americans for our vote. For too long, we have been played for our vote. Now we will not support a candidate who does not do something specifically for black Americans.

Our Story

A newsletter that takes you seriously.

The Black Critical Thinker started as a private notebook — the kind a citizen keeps when the public conversation has stopped being useful. We thought there ought to be a desk that worked the other way around: one that respected the reader as a peer, did the slow reading first, and then produced something short, citable, and worth forwarding.

So we built it. Four mornings a week, one piece of writing, clearly argued and properly footnoted. No sponsored takes, no ad networks, no pressure to perform on a timeline owned by somebody else. The reader is the entire business model.

Today, we publish for thousands of Black Americans who plan to be useful in the rooms they walk into — and to bring better questions home from them.

Frequently asked

Six honest answers.

Still have questions? Reply to any issue — the editor reads them.

 • Four mornings a week — Monday through Thursday. One tightly argued piece per issue, around six minutes of reading. Fridays are reserved for letters from readers and corrections; weekends are quiet on purpose.

 • Ten dollars a month, billed monthly. New subscribers get 30% off their first issue automatically applied at checkout. There is no annual lock-in and no surprise pricing.

 • Yes. Cancel from a single button in your account or by replying to any issue. We do not run retention spirals or hide the exit. The reader is the entire business model — if it stops working for you, we want to know.

 • No. We do not sell, rent, or share your email with third parties. We do not run an ad network. We do not pass your inbox to a sponsor or partner. The list belongs to the desk and the reader, in that order.

 • It is written for Black readers — that is the perspective of the desk and the audience we work for. Anyone serious about American politics is welcome to read along, with the understanding that the room belongs to the people we are addressing.

 • Reply to any issue and the editor will read it personally. For account or billing questions, email the support address listed in the footer. Letters we publish on Friday are always with permission.
